Sail into the Age of Exploration: Craft, Build, and Navigate the Era that Changed the World
The Age of Exploration was a time of daring voyages, uncharted waters, and the meeting of worlds. From the late 1400s through the 1700s, sailors braved unknown seas in search of wealth, knowledge, and new horizons. Their ships carried not only goods, but ideas and cultures that would shape history forever.
Embark on a Journey of Craft and Discovery:
In this hands-on adventure, students will step into the shoes of sailors and shipbuilders from centuries past. First, they’ll create their own sailor’s money pouch—crafted much like those used to hold precious coins earned from long voyages and trade. As they work leather into shape and thread the drawstring tight, they’ll discover the importance of currency, commerce, and personal belongings for sailors traveling far from home.
Next, they’ll bring a piece of maritime history to life by assembling a detailed 3D wooden ship model. Each mast, sail, and plank they fit together tells the story of innovation, engineering, and bravery at sea. Students will explore how these ships were the lifeline of exploration, carrying crews across treacherous waters into lands unknown.
Bring the Age of Exploration to Life:
Through these immersive activities, students will do more than study explorers—they’ll experience the craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and spirit that fueled their journeys. From the pouch that safeguarded a sailor’s pay to the ships that carried them into history, every piece connects them to the challenges and triumphs of the era.
Let them tie the knots. Let them set the sails. The Age of Exploration is ready to depart.
