| Charlie Chapman was born in London, England on 16 April 1889 to music hall enter- tainers Charlie Chaplin and Hannah Hill. After his parents’ separation, Charlie and his brother Sydney spent their childhood in poverty, living in a workhouse and, later, an orphanage for destitute children. Charlie first acted on the stage at the age of five and later toured the U.S. several times as a member of a traveling performing troupe. He took his first job in the U.S. with the Keystone Film Company for $125 per week. By the end of his career, he was earning over $1,000,000 per year. He is well known for his roles in silent films, where he earned the nickname, The Little Tramp |
