| Michelangelo Buonarroti was well known throughout Europe as an architect, sculptor, painter, and poet. His work was greatly influenced by the Italian High Renaissance era. He was summoned by the Pope to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Working on scaffolding high above the chapel floor, he painstakingly worked for four years before finally finishing this masterpiece.
