| Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin - was recognized as a holy man in Romanov-era Russia, but many were wary of his disconcerting and frightening religious practices. Tsar Nicholas II hired Rasputin to cure his wife of hemo- philia, and the holy man deviously used her trust to gain power. Soon his corrupt appointees filled high government positions. In World War I, Rasputin started many scandals and replaced his opposition with those that wanted power and money. His enemies tried to poison him, but he survived their attempt to kill him. Later they stabbed, shot, and finally drowned him in a river, burning his remains. |
